Salans has been advising clients in Kazakhstan since 1990. We officially opened an office in Almaty in 1994, followed by a satellite office in Atyrau in 2001. We combine detailed knowledge of Kazakh law and business practices with the resources of a global law firm; in particular we draw on the experience of our market-leading CIS practice to ensure we provide a seamless service to our clients permanently located in the Republic of Kazakhstan and those who conduct their business through local branches, representative offices, or joint-ventures.
Our Approach
Our office in Almaty currently consists of 30 lawyers and additional professional support staff. Partners from our Paris, London, Moscow and St. Petersburg offices having significant experience in the region support our 4 resident partners in Kazakhstan on a regular basis. All our lawyers in Kazakhstan speak fluent English and Russian, and several speak Kazakh, French, German, Korean, Kyrgyz, and other languages. We are able to translate documents in-house using native English, Russian, and Kazakh speaking lawyers and paralegals.

Atyrau
Continuing our pioneering tradition of providing legal services within the countries of the CIS, Salans established the first permanent office of a Western law firm in the city of Atyrau, Kazakhstan in 2001. Our Atyrau office places a great emphasis on the use of the Kazakh language and the needs of our clients to have legal documents properly drafted and executed when required in Kazakh.
Our Approach
In addition to resident legal staff in Atyrau, partners and associates from Almaty provide support to the office and our clients based there on a regular basis. We have developed excellent relationships with local and regional government officials and international investors in this region, which is experiencing some of the fastest and most dynamic business growth in the world, owing to its proximity to rapidly-developing oilfields.
